The Most Unique Names In History

It seems as if everywhere you look today, a child is being born and given a very strange name. Parents are no longer looking to pass down family names or stick to those names that have been deemed as popular over the last few years. Instead, they’re creating their own names in order to give their child something completely unique.

But although creative and unique names have started to become more widespread over the last few years, some people have been blessed with unique names many years ago. The following is a quick look at some of the most unique names in history.

Thursday October Christian
Fletcher Christian was a leader on the HMAV Bounty. When his son was born, he did not want to give the child a name that would remind him (or anyone else) of England, so he gave his child an unusual name. Since the child was born on a Thursday in October, Thursday October Christian became the child’s legal name.

Pedro V
Leave it to royalty to give their children strange names. Queen Maria II and King Consort Ferdinand II had their first son and decided to give him a unique name: Pedro de Alcantara Maria Fernando Miguel Rafael Gonzaga Xavier Joao Antonio Leopoldo Vitor Francisco de Assis Julio Amelio de Saxe-Coburgo-Gotha e Braganca. Thankfully, when he became king, he was simply referred to as King Pedro V.

God Shammgod
God Shammgod is a former NBA player, having played with the Washington Wizards from 1997 to 1998. His legal name is actually God Shammgod, but growing up, he had people refer to him as Shammgod Wells. When he attended Providence College, he was told that if he wanted to be referred to as Shammgod Wells, he would have to legally change his name. Because he couldn’t afford it, he went back to God Shammgod, and it stuck throughout the rest of his basketball career.

The Zappa Children
Musician Frank Zappa has made it a point to give his children unique names. It first started with his eldest daughter, Moon Unit Zappa. His second child is named Dweezil Zappa, and the last two are Ahmet Emuukha Rodan Zappa and Diva Thin Muffin Pigeen Zappa respectively.

Longar Longar
No, I didn’t repeat myself. Longar Longar was a center for the University of Oklahoma’s basketball team from 2004 to 2008. He is initially from Sudan, and he was given the name Longar after his father.

Ten Million
You’d think that Ten Million would be a unique name from today, but it’s not. Instead, Ten Million was a minor league baseball player before World War I, and Ten Million was his real legal name.

Penial and Manases
According to a 2011 study done by KidZone, there were six children named Penial and six children named Manases in 2011 alone. Other strange names that were given to multiple children in 2011 included Penisimani, Godswill, Eh, and Swayze. And it seems as if unique names will only continue to grow over time.
